Re: solenoid

Hi Bentel
A selenoid is basicly an electro-magnetic switch. When you electrafi the magnet it opens or closes. I see from you previous posts your having starter problems. A selenoid is used in the starter circut as a way to switch the starter motor on. Sorry I am really not to good at explaining electrics.

Re: solenoid

wbentel
The heavy (6 gauge) wire that carries the current from the battery to the starter would cause the starter to run all the time if it was hooked directly to the starter. Problem, starter needs heavy wire but you don't want to run heavy wire to the dash and back so you can start with a key. Solution is the electro-mechanical device called a solenoid that allows small wires to carry current that energizes a coil to create a magnetic field to pull a spring loaded metal core
down to contact (bridge across) the two contacts that transfer the voltage from one side of the solenoid to the other side where it flows to the starter. Hope the brief explanation helps.
Backfire ;)
