Solid Fur or marine ply fur for stingers? Which?

I have been pondering the costs of my fixing up the Batboat. Progress has been slow because of the weather and funding. (I recently had my identity stolen and now want to pay for things with cash in hand.)

The next thing I need to do is replace stringers and transom.

The one sheet of Marine Fur ply I have is $100 per sheet and I have to go to the other end of the county to get it (they are the only ones who sell it) with no way of getting it back home except for hitching up the structurally unstable boat and putting it in there.

However, I thought of something.

I already have a large left over section from my 3/4 inch marine grade plywood, cut for my transom. Its from fir.

Can I use this for stringers? The longest two stringers will have to be put in in three sections but I have enough to do it.

As you can see in the photos, the stringers are not very large. The two smaller ones are no more than 1 1/2 high.

Is there a problem with using properly epoxied marine ply versus solid fir boards?

I want to finish putting in the transom, floor and stringers but the hold up is getting the cash funds to buy more ply and transporting it. It would be great to get all of the structural stuff and hull repair done before the end of fall.

it takes a lot of material to splice stringer, because you have to sister the splices on both sides.

BTW, the two longest stringers are about 11- 12 foot long. My boat is 14 foot.

I would use plain old pressure treated ply, easy to do overlap/skarf joint splices, its strong, cheaper than marine ply, and will not rot even if the glass job fails and water eventually comes in contact.

Tack a 2x2 to the top side to give a wider area to screw the floor to.

And unless you really plan on having a 20 year plus life span from the boat, polyester/vinylester resin will do the job for 1/3 price of epoxy.

I agree. Why spend the huge bucks on marine ply or epoxy resin when plain old exterior grade fir ply and poly resin will work just fine and much easier on the pocket book.

Have a great day.

So Epoxy will last longer than Polyester?

I want this boat to last about 40 years. I'm 38 right now and intend to have it for a long time.
