Just wondered why solid transoms are replaced with plywood ones....my original on my old aluminum Starcraft is solid 1.5 inch....do I replace it with plywood glued together?...seems a solid board wood look better as it is exposed on the inside in this boat......

Plywood is used because it is strong, easy to work with, and inexpensive.

Re: solid transom vs. plywood.....

When laminated properly, plywood is actually stronger than a solid piece of dimensional lumber because of the grain running at right anles with plywood and only one way with a solid piece of lumber. Solid lumber will split with the grain (down the middle) and plywood won't.
