Won't hurt to have the batteries load tested either at your local parts house.

Re: Soliniod sticking part 2

solinoid buzzing is a sign that it can not get enoght ampage to keep the coil saturated so it keeps dropping out this happens when the battery is unable to supply the ampage required. a bad starter can pull so much ampage that the voltage drops to a level that the solinoid will drop out disconnecting the starter thus increasing the voltage and reshutting the solinoid so its a cycle thus its buzzing. load test the battery is the first thing to do and its free at most auto stores. next is to disconnect the starter and test the solinoid with a volt meter at the terminals if that works then try with the starter. while turning the starter over the voltage will drop to around 10-11v if it drops any further then you have a starter or wire problem. the solinoid takes a jolt of power to close but it takes very little power to keep it closed so you may have a problem in the wiring to the motor i surgest you disconnect the wire from the controller to the solinoid and make a test wire from the + terminal of the solinod (with a inline fuse) and a push button to the pos of the battery. once the engine is running test the original wire from the controller to see if there is voltage on the wire indicating a problem.
if you have no voltage to the solinoid especially as your gauges no longer work you will need to test to find the break in the system, check the inline fuse holder (they are cheap and can burn the contacts so the fuse doesnt connect) the plug on the motor then work your way to the ignition switch then work your way back until you find the problem (not sure where your netrual switch is but thats a test point).

(Starter Solenoid Sticking)
(J. Reeves)

Sooner or later a boater will encounter a situation wherethe key is released from the START to the RUN position, or to the OFF position and the boater suddenly realizes that the electric starter is still running. This is due to having the starter solenoid sticking in the closed (contact) position. Sometimes a whack to the solenoid will unstick it temporarily but usually it's necessary to remove the cable from the battery.

The cause? A weak battery or even a top notch battery that is running low in power causes a arcing within the solenoid that eventually welds the two opposing large terminals together.... the two opposing terminals being the large incoming positive battery solenoid terminal connection and the large terminal leading from the solenoid to the starter. The return spring with ther solenoid simply isn't strong enough to break that weld resulting in the continued flow of voltage to the starter.

The cure? If the battery is flawed, get rid of it and purchase a top notch battery. And also...... Replace the solenoid. Don't play with it, trusting that it won't happen again because it absolutely will, and that happening is usually in the worse possible scenario.

After the motor starts, you cant hear the starter to see if its still running, i am installing a red light indicator to the helm from the power lead on the starter, if the light stays on i know so is the starter.
