Solve worn gimbal steering play with hydraulic system?

Hello everyone,
I have been searching this forum extensively and have figured out that the upper swivel shaft of my 1989 bravo 1 drive is turning (slipping actually) inside the steering lever. Maybe tightening the pinch bolts on the steering lever would help, but I'm not about to drill holes in the housing to find out. Hopefully my assessment of this is correct: To fix it, I pretty much need to take the entire transom assembly apart.

Would installing an IMCO or similar external hydraulic steering system solve the problem and upgrade my steering at the same time? Is this safe? The drive seems solid except for the inch or so of steering play. Drive and motor have 410 hours.

Thanks everyone for your help, I'll be checking back frequently if I've left anything important out.

Mike.

Howdy, Mike.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Outboard and outdrive are not the same thing.

I will move this to the I/O forum (Mercruiser, etc.)

Good luck. :)

IMCO has great stuff. You'll not regret it. They make all kinds of beefed up parts for Bravos. I'd bet if you called them they'd know exactly what you need.

Good luck!

hello
to answer your question I will use the statement most often used on my kids
NO
hydraulic steering will not and cannot make up for mechanical wear. you have to fix the gimbal first. some hulls you can acess the nut some you cannot. if you dont wish to use the plug kit then yes a shield teardown is next.
and it was a common problem on the bravo units. especially if the nuts are not torqued every 50-100 hours

M
how tight are the rest of the parts there must be some play

fixing the steering is not cheep but any hyd steering would have to cost more and be much harder to install than just repiaring what you have now

tommays

Not to disagree,
But, To take it a step further,
If the Only Problem is that the Steering Lever is loose on the swivel pin,
And the Swivel Bushings aren't Bad,
And you're talking about an External transom to outdrive Hyd. Steering.........

Then, Ayuh, It's a Major Up-Grade.... Race Boat Technology..........
Go for It.......

If the swivel pins,+ gimbel ring are loose,
All Bets are Off............. ;)
