Trim question here too:

2007 40HP Merc EFI 4stroke.
I cannot figure out how to get to the last set of bolts that are holding my lower unit on. help!

Its getting to the point that instead of having the skeg welded I am about to give up and get a skeg guard. The piece that broke is within a quarter of an inch of the prop shaft so maybe it is for the better?

Re: trim plate removal

They are all just above the anti-cavitation plate. I hope you are not trying to remove the powerhead. Are you the one who was describing taking off the cowling to get to them in another post?

I hope I am not trying to do that.!!

I have attached 2 pictures of the area (the green is due to camera) I am looking at, the prop and right cowling are off.

Every other motor I have seen has a bolt at the top to release the plate and the merc place I went to for parts said a bolt at the top about where the '13x26' sticker is. The bolt shown at the bottom of the pic spins will little resistance but is not finger loose.

Re: trim plate removal

Should be a rubber plug right there above that sticker. I can't tell through in that pic. If so, Pop it off and look down in there...then either a Allen wrench, or a socket on it..

Not a rubber plug or other opening to be found, the surface is smoother mercury black. I was not able to detect anything under the sticker either (tapped it 10 times with a sharp knife).

I saw a newer looking 90HP merc and it had the water flow slits at the side off and it was unpainted white metal under there. The service guy said that was NOT how to get the trim plate off (he said the plug thing), besides I cannot see anyway to get those pieces off either, they look one with the lower end.

If you are trying to get the trim tab off (ie. that silver part in your second picture), Did you try the bolt right there in the middle of it? Underneath that is another bolt. You also have a couple of nuts just above the anti-cavitation plate . It looks to me at least 1 is still there in the picture. There should also be another one on the leading edge of the gear case.

HI Rockpile, yes I have tried that bolt in the centre of the trim tab (silver disk). It spins easily when a wrench is put to it but after many revolutions there is no additional play or visible progress for the bolt coming out.....it also does not tighten. I think this is by design but need confirmation. There are no other fastening devices visible to me for this item.

When i was at the service center they had dozens of motors....almost all with a bolt on top and that is what I was told to look for.....that mechanism is not on this motor.

Are there other pictures I could/should post?

Re: trim plate removal

Ok I didn't catch that at first, sorry. It sounds stripped to me. I would LIGHTLY pry down on the tab between it and the anti-cav plate while trying to remove the bolt. You may have to tap LIGHTLY on the tab to free it up as well.

Anyone out there with this type of Mercury trim tab setup (no top access) that can confirm that the bolt in this pic should just unscrew and come out?

many thanks,

Re: trim plate removal

Looks like I am going to abandon the trim plate removal (and skeg repair) and put a skeggard in its place.

But one day I may have to adjust the trim.

Sooo....for arguments sake, lets say the center bolt is stripped. Are the threads that are stripped a part of the lower unit housing or is it a piece that can be replaced? With the LU have to be dropped?

Re: solved - trim plate removal

Skeggard is a no go. Got tired of waiting for the manual and went for the pry solution. It worked.

I did not see any signs of stripping, just lock-tight:p

I think its a strange design, there is a risk of the bolt falling out without lock-tight, but, I am not an engineer so I have to trust its right.

thanks guys for the guidance and info!
