I am going to buy a boat on Saturday with a 1985 Volvo 5.7ltr V8 inboard engine Sterdrive, but before i part with my money the seller is letting me sea trial her first.

My question is, what should i look out for when trialing her? Any sounds i should keep my ear out for etc.?

Forgive the question but i am new to inboards

Thanks for any advice you can give me

Stuart

Listen for any grumbling sounds coming from the sterndrive, particularly when cornering, which could indicate either bad gimbal bearings and/or bad U-joints. Check the sterndrive oil for water contamination (it will look like chocolate milk), indicating a bad seal somewhere). Watch the temp gauge after an extended run at full throttle. If it spikes, that could point to poor waterflow from the raw water pump or a stuck thermostat. Check the temperatures of the exhaust manifold. If there are sustantial differences, it could mean you have a plugged manifold (they may look good on the outside, but inside may be another story). If the boat is on a trailer, before sea-trialing, run the engine with muffs attached and check waterflow out of the exhaust. Poor flow could incate a problem with the cooling system.
Good luck and I hope everything checks out OK. :)
