Just be sure that when you pick the size (if you are going from a crt tv) to pick one based on the vertical dimension of your old TV. With the new formats, choosing a comparative diagonal measurement will leave you with an unsatisfying picture size.

Re: Some good deals on LED TVs now? Samsung 47'"??

I'm in the market to replace our 42" LCD Sharp Aquos with a 65" LED SMART TV. When we got it 42" was huge now it's tiny. I'm having a hard time ignoring the Vizio and it's high content but ultra cheap price. I'm seeing some complaints all around for many brands with the 120HZ refresh rates versus the 240 HZ of the more expensive LED's (and of course of the superior Plazma rates). My point is I'm seeing references in online reviews from people who paid $995 for the 65" Vizio on sale. A 47" anything other than a high end Sony or similar should be easily had for under 800$. I've got a bunch of LCD and LED tv's at home and I can tell you that the new Westinghouse looks great but the sound is awful and the lag when changing channels with the remote will make you want to pull your hair out. The budget tv's seem to each have their own annoying little thing that reminds you why it was cheaper than the others. A sound bar and a cable box with its own remote would cure the issues with the Westinghouse since the picture is very good.

Take a good look at the LG's, I have two of them from defferent vintages and have been nothing but pleased wiht both of them. Reviews cannot replace actually seeing them and knowing what to look for.

Bought a 60" LG plasma (3D) a year ago and couldnt be happier. Look at the comparisons, they compare everything to plasmas. Led is tons better than it used to be but do a side by side comparison & see what you end up with.

I see a lot fewer plasmas than in the past that's for sure. They are heavier, use more electricity and the worst is they glare so bad they don't work in the rooms we need them where there are so many windows you can't do anything about it. The picture is stunning though if you can get away with one. My biggest beef with our 42" Sharp Aquos LCD is that a dark scene is unwatchable. The screen nearly goes black when you are supposed to be able to see the scene. I've tried every adjustment and there is no fixing it. Our LED Tv's are so much brighter and more vibrant than our LCD tv's and of course they weigh almost nothing by comparison.

My GF bought a plasma for her cabin. TV is almost unwatchable during the day time. They are good for dark rooms. They just aren't bright enough and have too much glare.

I just read that January is the second biggest discount month for TV's due to the upcoming Las Vegas Technology show where the manufacturers unveil their 2013 models. Black Friday in November is the biggest.

I agree, You need to be able to control the light with a plasma but it is worth it if you can. The off-angle viewing is great on a plasma, Not soo much on a LED/LCD - The plasma's are worth a look. I believe the only 3 making them now are LG. Panasonic & Samsung. As far as the enerhy consumption, It's lie $23.00 for the year with the plasma, Not the end of the world.

Yeah the extra electricity is nothing in the big picture and I've got to say only one of our earliest LCD's had a not so good viewing angle mostly if you were directly below the set...the rest of them are viewable from any angle I can come up with. Even the 19" LED Samsung in the kitchen I can watch it from the widest angle possible while at the sink and it is down the counter next to me.
The biggest beefs I see in reviews not including the poor sound since i presume most have a sound system with their larger tv's is ghosting, bad black levels and the blurryness from fast motion. As an example when we used to have the WII Game Rock Band and the lyrics to the song you are supposed to sing scroll along the screen, they are very difficult to read with a 60HZ LCD...I presumed 120HZ fixed that but I see the same complaints. The 240HZ tv's then are a whole other eschelon up price-wise. Cheap TV's seem to alway have a poorly though out remote as well...like they didn't pay attention at all. Vizio, as a budget tv seems, to have the problem fixed and even has a second side to the remote with a full qwerty keyboard for when you are on the internet.

It's my understanding the unless you're a "Gamer" a super fast refresh rate isn't needed. And, may hinder watching regular tv. Just what I've heard....

You would have that issue with any TV. Bottom line is that your Wii and any other source is at 30FPS and the TV re-samples that at 60,120 or 240 so any flicker you see will be there regardless of the re-sample rate. Its a non-issue that was only made an issue to try to sell you a new TV with a higher sample rate.

Most of our TV's are the 60HZ (the lowest refresh rate) variety and we've had some of them since Flat panels came into being and only briefly do we ever get annoyed with fast action on the screen. We aren't huge sports watchers and since we watch mostly football, it just never is an issue. Overall for our needs which are just casual viewing the picture quality isn't the issue, its the other features of the tv's. You will see serious videophiles post scathing reviews and other casual viewers post great reviews for the same tv. As for bruceb58's comment that is good info to know. When I bought my Aquos, the picture was really bad and come to find out they never soldered the input sockets to the actual tv computer board. When I pulled out the cords from the tv, the female ends built into the tv came right out as well. It's a pain to return a large tv.

My living room is full of windows and I have no problem viewing my Plasma at all, my next TV will also be a plasma, I have been 100% satisfied with mine for over three years now.

Seems to me, we had this same conversation about a year ago.
