It seems like some wakeboarders are using HUGE ropes...like in the 100-125' range compared to my 75' rope. Are they really that long, and if so, what is the benefit of such a long rope?

It may give you more time to perform complex tricks before the rope tightens on you. It depends a lot on wake/wind/speed conditions at the moment as well as which tricks you want to do.

Actually you want your rope to be tight all the time. That's why we use specific lines instead of ski ropes.
Not sure why they would be so long, maybe they don't know, or they are just messing around. We put two lines together once, that was pretty weird.

all depends on the wake the boat produces. 100' behind my boat and i'd be sitting behind the wake in white water.

Mine is a cheap Wakeboard rope from Academy. I probably paid $25 or 30 for it.

It looks to me like any other ski rope I have used in the past.

What does a "specific line" like you are referring to look like and how is it different than a ski rope? How long are they, normally?

Re: some guys have the longest ropes!!!

Wakeboarding lines are typically made of Dyneema, and are about 3/16" diameter. Compared to a ski rope that is usually 3/8? polypropylene. You want a ski rope to stretch so you can cut out around a buoy and bounce back. You want a stiff line wakeboarding, it's what helps with tricks, and helps you get off the wake better.
As far as length, I would say somewhere around 70'. But it depends on rider ability, and boat wake. There should be a spot on your wake where the crest is smooth, and then transitions to "white water". Almost like a real wave when it breaks. You want to ride just ahead of that point.

OK, that makes sense! Thanks!

I saw a guy yesterday, and you are right, it was half the diameter of my ski rope and looked almost like cable (not a large fluffy braided line, but tightly woven.

So I guess if I hit that crest and not that mushy wake, I may go OVER it rather than THROUGH it.

So my line may need to be longer or shorter depending on where that spot it.

I am a long-time surfer (25+ years) so I know what part of the wave you are referring to. I am not currently in that spot, but just hitting the mush behind it when I cross over.

Re: some guys have the longest ropes!!!

I have to run my rope at 50 - 55ft to get the best part of the wake behind my I/O. If I run any longer I get into the mush and it's hard to get any lift.

We got our first rope from ****'s sporting goods which was the mesh type but made for wakeboarding. We used that for a year and a half before the handle came apart. This summer I bought a Liquid Force rope from a local shop which works really well. The only down fall is it's black and hard to see in the water and since I fall a lot it can be tricky trying to find it.

100%. get that rope sorted. it'll make a massive difference. mine is about 60' but that has been determined by the wake and wake alone, yours may be shorter or longer. also, agreed about the spectra lines. well worth it but they can be pricey.

enjoy!

Re: some guys have the longest ropes!!!

I ride at 65' line lenght, from the tower that is probably a little more than 55' off the back of my boat.

I can ride anywhere from 60' - 80' line lenght on my boat based off the wake at 23mph. If you ride faster, it will stay cleaner for a longer distance.

The General "Pros" ride set up is at 85' line lenght and usually around 24mph.

No I know we are all amatuers and out to have fun and not throwing big tricks... so we should adapt to our boats as best as possible.. no doubt.

Though the real answer is, the longer the rope the bigger you can throw the tricks... more height, more distance into the flats, more time to build speed coming into the wake... and the ability to have slack longer.

Its true you don't want the bounce back effect in your wakeboard rope, but its very untrue that you don't ever want slack. Often, as you cut into the wake and jump, you are moving faster sidways than the boat is going forward, so you get slack until you get to the otherside of the wake. This is why you don't want boucne back and a steady lenght. It allows you to jump, flip, rotate, and land without getting pulled off axis and make handle passes easier. If you slow down and get more pop, but les speed in your cut, you can maintain tension, and usually this is done to aid in spinning.

It was mentioned above about the material of the ropes being different... this si true, and I believe the patented name used for the wakeboard ropes is Spectra... or that may be a different non-stretch material. At anyrate, it is still a braided line, it is just usually coated with a plastic covering that makes it look like cable. Since its stronger and does not stretch, it can be much thinner.

60 and 75 is normal. If you 100 ropes or more they don't know what they are doing.

A real wakeboard rope is made of different material so it stretches less. I've used both and unless you are olympic capable you can't tell the diffeence. It also has protection by the handle so it doesn't fray. Lastly, and again, only for super boarders, the handle is 3" wider.

Im not a super boarder and I can tell a difference. I don't really feel it, but i can tell a difference in my riding.

Re: some guys have the longest ropes!!!

Ok...this morning i took a quick ski to see where the wake was curling compared to where the rope held me. I was in the mush but only 5' or so behind the curl. So i let off and boarded the boat and retied the knot about 6 or so feet forward and tried it again.

MUCH BETTER! This put me hitting the wake about 2-3' in front of the mush and i was able to hop out of the water much easier if i hit it at a fast approach, or just slide over it if i approached it slowly. A couple times i got high enough air that i freaked out and dropped the rope as soon as i landed and stabilized.

But got on it again and worked at getting more air and further over the wake.

Thanks to all for the help.

Re: some guys have the longest ropes!!!

I rode with a guy once that was very talented. He put 2 ropes together @ 150' of line and was riding a super flexible board - possibly a LF roam - and was doing theses mind blowing butter slides. He would go way outside the wake and use the flex of the board to get it sliding up on the tips and then flip it into a 180 and slide the other tip. He had lots of other surface tricks since he mostly rode the cables at OWC so I'm sure thats how he picked it up but he needed lots of open clean water to do a lot of the tricks.
