Some Play In Lower End Propeller Shaft Mercruiser A1G1 140hp

I did my water pump today and noticed that the shaft (shown in photo) had some play when I removed the impeller housing and the bottom lower seal assembly under the water impeller housing, is this normal? Could the shaft bearings be shot because of that play?

How do you know if the bearing around the shaft is good or worn.

I just went side to side with it and noticed play, about a 10th of an inch or less. I'll try that today, as I'm waiting for the impeller kit to come. I just wanted to know if it was normal to have play.
