ok....this is a glassing rant.

its -8 c
i am glassing some thru hull holes on the botton of a 30 footer.
i had to punch the holes thru to get out a pair of large sizzors that the manufacturer just "left" in there ratteling around. the hull is 3/4 inches thick.

i have tented the bottom of the hull and am shooting a big propane heater into the tent.
the boat is on blocks.....so its 2 feet off the ground and i have to crawl underneath the boat and into the tent.

in order to glass cold temps like this......you have to use the catylic reaction of the resin to keep the heat going, and chemically bond all the layers of glass.

well......glassing the bottom of a hull while you are underneath isnt so easy....the glass does not like to stay up on the hull and wants to fall down in your face.....especially 4 foot sections of 1708 !
ya gotta lay under the glass ...hold the wet glass up with your hand...knees...feet, while trying to roll the gook on the boat....

i have 3 different 4 foot sections to do......each with 8 layers of 1.5 csm and a layer of 1708 between each layer.

the last section took me an hour to glass....

oh...did i mention you have to catylize the resin hot at 2.4 %. even cold you get 15 mins a batch.

now.....i get to sit here and monitor the temps to make sure the glass does not get too hot while its curing....

all the while waiting to climb back under the boat and grind everything flat so i can gellcoat it tonight.....

oh.....did i mention i have been at this for 13 hours so far......i figgure i got another 3 hours at least.....:(

why....oh why.......did i decide i wanted to repair boats in a canadian winter

free sizzors!!!! Score!!!!!!!!!!!

i got pics of them....im sending them into regal and tell them the hull number......they have recorsd of who worked on the hull :D

i want to restore the sizzors if i can....they are really rusted......but im going to spend an hour or so with the grinder to try and bring them back.....they are really heavy duty fiberglass cutting sizzors....the kind you cant buy any more

So it's -8c. Just look at it as 17.6f... Now, doesn't that make you feel better?

Well, if that's not enough, what about the scissors?:D

I thought I'd be a tough guy and work on my boat this winter. I tried a couple of times and after less than an hour I went home to watch TV in my heated house like a total wimp. It's really difficult to work in those temps.

I found two Budwiser bottle poured right into the foam on a Allison Craft I restored a few years back. No wonder it didn't last long....

Someone should start a thread on the interesting finds during boat restores......

Hey OOPS,

http://www.animationfactory.com/en/...spage=1&hoid=bf7cdd3094518da6b46e8d8a9f02f6eb

I'm kinda a Fupid Stucker but... you got me to thinkin...

Could a feller user some foam, like seat foam, covered in plastic and then kinda wax it and then gook up the lams and lay the glass lams on that foam and then with some helping hands push that up on that big old repair and then tape it all off to hold it in place? Would that be able to make it all conform to the hull well enuf, to get you off your back.

Like I said, I ain't the Sharpest Knife in the Drawer, I was just tryin to help a frozen feller out. But I would like to see a pitchur of dem dere sizzers

You could have bought a special plastic that does not stick to fiberglass and peels away after it has been laid up and dry to the touch. I think I would have gone in from the top myself...

I'll bet its a hull of a job to do?

Next time try some waxed paper ( not wax paper..but Waxed paper ) layout your lams on that..then cut the extra paper up to your lam..then slap it up there. Work it a bit with your hands ( gloves on of cource ) then peel the paper off and roll out the repair.

One thing though..8 CSM and 6 1708s ? all at one shot ? Thats kinda pushing the envelope :) .. Might consider doing the layup in 2 different stages...

Ayuh,... As Handy as you are Oops,...
I'm suprised ya didn't have a thermostatically controlled heated formica form built to put that plug inta place....
Braced off a hyd. motorcycle jack, ya could push it into place, jack it tight, 'n go Home....;)

I'm hopein' it might get that warm in a day or so around here......

t5his was a 30 foot mini yacht....no way to get to it from the top....and on these you cant seperate the cap !...

i glassed and gellcoated a backing block....then after cure...i wet glassed the bottom of the block ....stuffed it in the hole (yes i cleaned the hole with acetone) and moved it so it was covering the hole......drilled a screw into it....and used the screw to pull down the block......giving me a pressure cure on the glass. then glassed from the out side.

Next time try some waxed paper ( not wax paper..but Waxed paper ) layout your lams on that..then cut the extra paper up to your lam..then slap it up there. Work it a bit with your hands ( gloves on of cource ) then peel the paper off and roll out the repair.

YD.

thanks for the tip on the wax parer....ill have to give that a whirl.....it was a real pita last night holding the big wraps up.....

and yes...i did a few layers a time.....4 sessions on each repair spot.....all the time monitoring the temp of the curing process....when the glass was coming off the back end of the cure sharply....i ground off the excess resin and hit it with the next layer.

doing it that way i used the temp of the curing process to help with the next cure......the top of the lay ups was controlled by the heater and lights...moviing them closer or farther from the layup or opening the tent a bit. I monitored the temps every 5 minits so i knew what the glass was doing at every step of the cure.....

thats why i needed to be shot....lol

Cutting a perfectly good boat in half just to add a few feet to the middle seems like a walk in the park today doesn't it.:D:D Good luck to you Opps!

lol.......you have no idea how close i was to doing that!.....
the only problem is that the hull was not the same in the different places or i wold have....one right on the keel....the other just off center....the other was ....well at least kinda flat...
and the other was on the impact spot farther up the bow.......soo....too much work to make forms for the indivudial spots.....
but we think alike my friend !

YD.

i really want to respond more to this for the guys.
the reason YD said this, is because the heat build up of the resin on cure is extreme....the amount of layers i was talking about is huge...if a person did them all at once.....the resin would cook...too much and be really brirttle and that repair would fail imho.
resin IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.....it is brittle....resin with glass is your friend...cooked resin is worse.
keep as close to a 50/50 resin to glass mixture as you can....and dont do more than 3 layers of thicker material (1708) at one time......4 layers of csm, or it will get too hot....
i have heard other pros say smoking resin is ok....but really....its not.....

i had a infra red gun pointing at several spots on the curing fiberglass through out this process every 5 mins....not too hot (over 180f...actually 170 for me) and not under 90 coming off the back end of the cure.

the longer the glass can hold 180 during cure the stronger it is.
some well known manufacturers of your counter tops.....keep the heat on your part for 12 hours at 190 constant to keep the stregnth of the part coming off the back end of the cure...(the back end of the cure = when the heat from the catylic reaction is slowing down, and the part starts to cool down)
