Ok so i decided to replace all my gauges since NONE of them worked. '87 yamaha 200 hp. So i put the tach on, everything seemed to work. Moved on to the volt meter and wasn't working out so i decided to take a break and clear my mind over lunch. When i came back someone had messed w/ the wires and grounded one out. It sat like that for at least an hour :( At that point nothing worked so i decided to rewire the whole console( and hopefully remove any melted/shorted wires). Replaced Water press, Tach, Volt, tilt, fuel, speedo this afternoon and rewired EVERYTHING there. Have it all hooked back up, but something is still not right because I cranked it and the + lead sparked at the battery i felt it and it was red hot. My first notion was "i have a hot wire grounded somewhere." but i disconnected everything except the 2 main battery cables to the engine and still does it. Checked all plugs at or around the engine/solenoid. NO IDEA WHERE TO GO FROM HERE!

Help someone pls...at least give me some direction!

Thanks in advance -Scrap

Update: The hot lead doesnt spark when i connect the battery, everything seems fine until you turn the motor over( turn key to spring-loaded cranking position). Then you get sparks and heat at the + battery post. Key switch.....? Anything else i could check?

Sparks indicate bad connections. Wires that overheat indicate too much resistance for the amount of current flow, be that from bad connection or from drawing to much current for the size of wire

Re: Someone HALP! (yamaha)

ok well th main battery cables are huge(3/8Od id guess) and i put an meter on them and they are good so it must be a loose connection....but there aren't any connections that i am aware of that havent been checked. I'll check again. in the mean time...is it posible that the controller has a short in it since it only happens when the key is in the cranking position?

thanks

Where are the sparks coming from?
The lugs and cables can have internal connection problems also.
How are you testing with a meter?
Do a voltage drop test. You can find out how by doing a forum search on the subject.
