Is the jet an idle, mid or high speed jet? Replace the soldered jet with a new, correct one-then run it. You should find out how the engine ran for the prior owner. That may give you a clue as to why he did that.

I too would be buying a new jet and replacing it. The only way you can try the soldered up jet is to heat it up and tap all the solder out and then see what actual size it is and find the exact drill bit size and hand drill it out again. You can even use some solder wick and it will remove nearly all the solder after a while. But probably easier to buy a new one and play it safe... JMHO!

Get a new jet and start from scratch. Compression, spark and ect.

Thanks boogie and gm 280!! I got the solder out and it is actually smaller than all of the others. It's the one on top just before the butterflies....??? Any more thoughts on it??

Compression is 110-115....new trigger.... New power packs.... New coils... New plugs and wires... New sater coil...... And it still runs like crap....and that is when I took the carb apart. it was pretty clean really just that "jet" or "vent" or what ever it is was pluged off with solder......

That jet may the the idle air jet. P/N 324025. A # 34 jet. Those are small jets. When you cleaned the carbs, did you blow an aerosol carb cleaner through all the passages in the upper carb body?

After reading the rest of your comments, sounds like the previous owner before you had some idle issues and made a decision to plug that idle jet to compensate for their problem to try and lean out the idle. The other carbs would take care of the fuel mixture during idle. But that isn't how things are fixed. You find the problem and fix it according to the shop manual and don't circumvent any part like that. If you don't own a specific manufacture, Horse Power, and year shop manual, I highly recommend buying one. It covers every little thing concerning only your engine and doesn't try to cover every engine made. So a lot better step by step explanations of everything. Also buy the proper size replacement jet(s) and also see what other jets in all the carbs could have been changed as well. At this point you really don't know what somebody else was doing with those carbs. Then after getting everything back to a known standard, then you can work towards any problems that show up. But you have to have a known setup and baseline to work from... JMHO!
