Something Is Wrong

Hey guys and girls.I need some help I have a 84 75hp and I just replaced the water pump but I ran into a problem when I put the lower unit back up and turn the propeller it should turn the engine over.Well not in my case.
The shift shaft is work as it should.It looks like the drive shaft is not up into the spline area.I even turn the engine by hand to see if the shaft would fall into place but (NO GOOD).What im asking is.Is there somehow the drive shaft fell down or is there something missing from up inside the engine .

I have the book on this engine but it show nothing on this problem.

the lower unit has jumped out of fwd gear and needs to be shifted back in. thats why I like to use rev gear

I have tryed every gear with the same thing going on.When I take a light and look up into the engine I do not see the spines.I will try it one more time before I put it in the crusher.
