Usually when I post on here, I'm asking for help because my 76 Johnson 85hp isn't running properly and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. . . This time though I have a question about how it got running so good. I had tuned up a new motor that I bought and tuned and tested just about everything on it. Well I took it out Sunday for the first time and it was running fine just not quite as fast as I knew it could about 26-8 mph. THEN all of a sudden while pulling a tuber I heard/felt something just give in the motor and in 2 seconds the boat climbed to 38mph!!! Something good for a change and it ran like that the rest of the day! Great surprise but does anybody have any idea what might have happened? I'm really just curious lol
Thanks guys n gals

Fouled pug cleaned itself and began firing - adding a third more power?

You know as dumb as it sounds I checked and tuned Everything but looked at the plugs and assumed they were fine because they didn't look too bad. That very well could have been it all along. I will change them all just for good measure!

Go back and have a look. Your tuber might have fallen off the tube. LOL Good for you and I'll go with the plug idea cause nothing else comes to mind. Rick.

Partially clogged high speed jets or perhaps timer base sticking? Make sure the timing advance linkage moves freely.

You may have only been running on 3 cylinders and the 4th one kicked in. Make sure none of the plugwires are touching ground, like the bottom two grounding on the two rear cowling latches.
