A long time friend of mine was recently taken down by a swat team for selling Oxycontin to an under cover agent. The setup was the classic sting, and he fell for it and was taken down hard. Now in custody, I find out that he had become a pain killer junkie over the years due to his involvement and injuries in the adult sports teams in his town.

This is a well educated man who I met when we were both about 22, and are now in our fifties. He has married a wonderful woman who used to be a run-way model for various designers, and you have seen her on countless magazine covers, posed for the love novel cover photos and paintings, and has been in many commercials. She stopped working in her early 30's and had 2 handsome boys with my friend.

Who would have thought that a guy who has a good job in the banking industry, coaches little league, soccer, and football games was having such problems.

He was in a lot of pain over the years. Pill after pill after pill eventually did not ease his pain, and instead, he became addicted. It got so bad, he had to sell the pills to pay for the pills. A real catch-22. Being a smart and resourceful man, he PURELY FABRICATED A NUMBER OF DOCTORS, ALONG WITH THEIR CREDENTIALS. That is a critical part of the story. Thats why its in bold. Anyone can "create" a doctor. All you need is their "number" and a few bits of info from your health care provider and BINGO! When the pharmacy calls to verify that the prescription called in by Dr. soandso is valid, you answer the phone and say "yes".

He also would take the common script from a doctor for a antibiotic, scan it into the PC, the digitally change it to be a narcotic prescription from one of his fabricated doctors. Printed out, they look just like the real thing.

Anyway, my friend is in re-hab, pending serious charges. Will most likely spend at least 2-3 years in jail from what his wife tells me. Will or has lost his job, because you can't be a felon in the banking industry.

A real clue to his drug use was that all his teeth fell out. Not from snorting cocaine or meth, but the drugs he took deplete the calcium in your body. The end result is serious tooth loss, and many surgeries to reattach tendons that break free from the bone. And serious weight loss because his stomach was such a mess from the pills eating holes in his whole digestive tract. He would drink a bottle or two of Riopan every day just to keep the pills down. And when the pills came up, he would fish them out of the sink and eat them again. Thats how bad it gets, you eat what you vomit.

So pay attention to your family and friends. If their teeth are falling out for no good reason, or they have had multiple surgeries over the last few years for "torn tendons" or their stomach is a mess along with the previous items, that is a strong clue that something has gone south in their life.

Severe intervention is the only choice you have to save loved ones in this condition. My friend was my best friend. As you get older you socialize less, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I had no idea he wore dentures. I had no idea his thin frame was from drug use. He seemed normal to me. Last time I saw him was in May, and we took out the off-road go-karts and went for a drive along with his sons. Everything looked normal to me. And that is the problem.....

Regards,

Mark

Always hear about these functioning addicts, and it seems so unlikely that it is so close to home. Good luck to your friend. Thanks for the warning.

So sorry to hear that Mark. It's truly tragic. Sounds like in his case it started innocently then spiralled out of control. Happens more than we'd like to acknowledge.

What totally amazed me is he was taking 60 pills a day. 60!!!! Thats a few hundred dollars in pills. Probably why he started selling, and created this web of doctors to keep writing false prescriptions.

I take Oxy for my reconstructed foot. (reconstructed being a loose term, but better than being amputated). I learned long ago, its best to just get used to the pain, and only take the pills when absolutely needed, than to be popping the pills all day long.

I feel for my friend. They will not let me in to see him. And his wife and kids are devastated. What can you do?

Yep, I know first hand...my 43 year old pot-head/alcoholic step son works as a cook, rides a moped, has nothing more than the shirt on his back! Ben in and out of jail his entire life!...And you know what, it's his mama(my wife) who pays the price for this everyday...what a waste of time, talent, humanity!...seems to be more of this than used to be...

Yep, its te ones who love the fallen that suffer the most. The fallen ones just have to do what they are told to do day to day (while in jail or rehab) and the people that love them suffer from morning till night. The parents and siblings often end up getting counseling or end up on anti-depressants.

The addicts wreck more than their own lives.

the people who should be in jail are the Doctors and Drug companies that push it. What would you think if your Dr. offered you heroin. Same family of drugs. Once addicted the recovery before the age of 50 is virtually %5. Then by 50 there is nothing left. Probably the worst drug ever allowed on the market because of the extreme mental not only physical effects.

But to this day they hand it out like candy in the Dr. Office and in hospitals.

I knew it was all over for this guy when he told his mom, "things really aren't so bad over at the jail"....They call it, "3 hots and a cot", or 3 meals a day and a place to sleep!...pathetic!

It was amazing the amount of hard drugs they offered and tried to get me to take, when I was recovering from my wounds received in the first Gulf war, I could have taken just about anything I wanted, with full sanction of my doctors! Currently, I take three Tylenol a day and that is it, but I still get the talk every time I got to the Dr. You know your life would be pretty much pain free if you take these pills, I politely decline and deal with the pain in other ways...

My next door neighbor whom I've known for almost 40 years is hooked on scrip pills. He's in his 60's and its amazing the number of pills he takes a day in addition a morphene/dillaudid <sp> pump thats in his stomach ! He admits he has a problem but he absolutely cant function with out the pain meds. His spine is where the pain is. Its got more metal in it than this computer I'm typing this on does! I"ve seen some of the hardware that has been taken out of his back and it greusome looking. He's sooo strung out most of the time that I"m afraid he's going to hurt himself or worse, someone else! Theres no talking to him about it. All the drugs he takes he has legal scripts for!

Prescription drug addiction is a serious problem in this country.

As I said in your other, similar thread, Mark, one must not wimp out. Treat addiction as a form of mental disease whose only cure is abstention.

I feel when people stray from the recommended dosage is where the trouble begins. I am looking at another knee surgery and hip replacement in the near future. Right now my doc has me on the weakest strength vicodin. However, I only take one in the morning to function at work. In the evening I use ice and keep it propped up. I have taken cortizone (sp) shots to help, but the draw back to too many of those is cataracts in your eyes.

I too have had friends who took handfuls at a time. Needless to say that pretty much destroyed friendship. Hope things work out with your friend Mark.

It's amazing that all this can take place today with work place drug testing, not only do they test for drugs, they also check levels of the drug in your system. I think 60 pills a day would come out a little high and might be a red flag.

They don't often do that for white collar jobs. You get tested prior to hire but that's about it.

I think the biggest problem is the lack of open and consistent medical records. People can go to four different doctors and get scripts written from each one.

You ready to have your mind blown? I've been in law enforcement for over 5 years and never had a drug test...

Mark, sorry about your friend. I had a friend who was going through a bottle of 90 10mg hydrocodone (per Dr. orders) in less that 2 weeks. I think I saved his life talking him off that s***.

kay there is no suprise. I was in the Navy building items of mass destuction (missles) in the time I was thee never once had a drug test, even though they knew there was a substace abuse problem of 98%. Now I work in a company that I have worked for 23 years, only drug test was 23 years ago.

Re: Something to keep an eye out for regarding drug abuse.

Oxycontin is as bad or worse than heroin IMO. 6 years ago my brothers wife became addicted. She was a nurse and training to fly on helicopters @ the hospital when she was fired for stealing oxy and who knows what else. She stopped taking care of their young daughters, one was an infant, and my brother had to quit his job because he was frequently out of town. As it came to light My brother discovered their house had been forclosed and sold at auction because she had not paid the mortgage for months, spending the money on drugs and hiding legal notices from him when he was home from out of town. He was luckily able to buy the house/land back, for 10K more than it sold for. It was very hard on everyone In both families and she got worse off when she went to live w her family 1/2 mi. away. She died in a head on collision w a logging truck, not sure if it was intentional as she was seen swerving on the highway before the accident. I hope she found peace because she didnt have alot here near the end. If you suspect painkiller addiction understand it is a very, very hard thing to overcome and worse the longer it occurs. I think most cant help themselves once it goes so far.

drug tests are useless. Scenario 1, Dad gets urine from son and heads to drug test. Son is clean of course.

The only way to beat addiction is with constant support and mentoring. It can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel in an addict or support role, but the reward is SOO worth it for anyone who has the oppurtunity to support or heal.
