Bought a used boat that has a 1990 Johnson 115 VRO. Owner told me to mix the gas/oil and told me how. I just found out today what the VRO is. How do I tell by looking whether the VRO has been disconnected or not? If it is working is there any harm in mixing for now? Ok, 3 questions...how hard can this motor be pushed regarding RPMs? Thanks all and sorry for the beginner questions.

No need to be sorry, it's what we're here for.

If you premix while the VRO is working, you get double oil. A bit smokier than usual, plugs will foul and need cleaning. No long term harm. If the owner said to premix, he probably disabled the oil side of the pump. But if there's an oil reservoir there, with oil in it, and the line from there to the pump is intact and not blocked off, you can tell if it's working by watching the oil level in the reservoir. If it goes down, it's pumping oil. If it stays the same, then it's not.

here are the sets for disconnecting the VRO, if they have been done you have to premix.

VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the motor. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.
