mercruiser 5.0l with alpha 1 gen 1. new water pump impeller last spring.
i was anchored in a small marina yesterday with lots of seaweed. on the way out it was a long no wake zone then i hammered down and the boat did not want to plain. figured there was a bunch of seaweed wrapped around the prop so i kept on it for a minute (i know dumb move, live and learn) boat planed off and i thought i was good until i smelled oil. looked down and temp. was about 260* on the gages. shut it right off and got towed in. now i think the seaweed was wrapped around the drive blocking the water intake.
i did have to run it about 3 hours later to get it from my slip to the trailer and it ran ok but heated up quick. i shut it off before it got over 180*.
tore down the out drive and the plastic housing is pretty melted but impeller looks ok.
i have 3 questions.
1. with the impeller looking ok shouldn't it kept pumping water? should i look elsewhere for overheating cause? is the seaweed just a coincidence?
2. the black plastic piece at the top of the copper tube, i think it is called the water pocket, is slightly melted but the tub still slides in tight and seems to seal. should i replace? i have heard horror stories that if i strip or snap off one of the bolts im screwed. it does look like the plastic around the bolts is bubbled a little.
3.the exhaust boots look ok. gear lube was clean, anything else i should check?
