Ok guys, I'd love to hear a vote on this one....

I've been working on a Volvo Penta 280 outdrive that was in seriously bad shape when I bought it. Oil had not been changed in years, serious aluminum itting, etc.

I've got the upper gearcase totally disassembled and I'm replacing all the gaskets, etc on it. Sadly, though, I've tried absoutely everything I can think of to separate the intermediate and lower housings, (PB Blaster, Paint Thinners, propane torch, etc. ) but no dice, the bolts have probably never been removed . Prop shaft seems to turn fine, and from what I've read (and correct me if I'm wrong) there's not usually alot of maintenance done in the lower housing.

So here's the vote... Should I move on, reassemble, fill the pits, and repaint, or is it crutial to take look at the lower and intermedite housings?

Thanks! Bob.

ok im not a volvo guy but is the impellor located in the lower housing or on the engine and what kind of look did the lower unit lube have when you drained it .... those would be the two things i would look into as an answer to your question .... good luck

You are not going to see much more by removing the lower. If you want to see the inside of the lower, remove the propshaft with a slide hammer,And you will not need to deal with the intermedite housing to lower bolts.

guys,

thank you so much. I really appreciate it. The oil was really dark and sludgy, not milky or anything, and didn't seem to have any metal bits in it. I've degreased all the parts and I think I may be ready to reassemble and paint.

I'll post a diff question about paints with a picture of the drive in another post.

Again, can't thank you enough for the thoughts. I guess I just needed the reassurance on it!
