This is a pontoon ?

Have a 25 hp yamaha out board. When going forward runs fine, but put it in reverse and start backing its like its slip and catch. It is more catch than any thing. Had lower drive off to replace water pump in july this year but have ajusted the shift rod 2x for this problem. Was thinking it was not going in gear all the way. Haven't used the boat for 2-3 years. Could it be a bad prop?

Possibly but I'd suspect the clutch dog. See if there are metal filings in your lower unit oil if you can.
Let me ask you this: when you approach a dock, beach, etc. do you use your reverse as a brake? If so you have probably blown out the gears. Even if you pause at neutral while moving forward, your prop is still spinning forward. If you go directly from F to R you're grindnig it down.
The reason I suspect it is that you have a small motor on a large boat, with a lot of momentum to stop. I'd suspect the same if you said you were a flounder fisherman.

no to both questons. I try to be careful and not to beat this boat and motor around. I change the oil and look at it and have never found any metal of any kind. I had the lower unit off to change water pump, could it be possible that I don't have the shift rod ajusted just right?
