As I have time to check this motor out, yesterday I gave the flywheel a tug hoping it was not seized. I was not and got it around on a compression stroke and was able to muscle it around. Is this typical of this motor or should it be much tighter? I have seen mention of them being low compression. oh, the plugs were in.
Thanks

With your strength I'm not surprised you can turn it over by hand!

Seriously, that's fine. You should be able to roll it up to compression and then thru. As long as the compression is fairly even on the gauge you're good to go.

cool, I will check the compression although I am not sure I really want to know. A buddy of mine used to play with Mercs and he said they were tight so it got my wheels turning. At this point I am hoping this motor is not too good to be true.
Everything under the powerhead cover appears to be in good shape, clean, no rust or grime so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks

There are some things to keep in mind about 2 strokes and compression. A lower static number doesn't mean its weaker or has less compression ratio. Higher exhaust port timing usually improves a 2 stroke's torque but lowers the static number.

A 200 crossflow may have higher static compression than a 200 looper but it's never gonna have the strength of a looper. I'd expect the stock V8 to have static compression of about 95 or so. Depends on what heads are on it.

Is my engine a crossflow or a looper? I really don't know the difference. I know car engines but not two strokes.

Loopers have power trim switches on the port side of the engine. Crossflows on the starboard.

If I'm wrong someone will holler :)

No, your V8 is a 90* looper. They never made a recreational crossflow V8. I think where that button thing got started was the 60* loopers have the button on the port side.
