I bought a boat a couple years ago with an 88 Mercury 115 inline 6. Its ran great from day one, however, this weekend I noticed on my dads boat of the exact same age and make has an air box, (sound attenuator) that mine does not. Obviously somebody removed it at one point or another. I have always wondered why his engine was quieter than mine but I just figured it was because of the boat seating in reference to the engine.

My question, is this part critical? I suppose if I found one cheap enough I would buy it to silence my engine a tad, but am I hurting the engine by running it without?
