My motor is an 1988 115hp Inline 6

I noticed in some parts diagrams that Mercury originally applied a sound insulation pad to the inside of the cowl of this 2 stroke motor. Mine must have been removed by a previous owner. Mercury catalog says this part is no longer available.

Does anyone know where to find this? Does it make a difference in sound level?

Other generic products can be substituted, available from marine dealers.

None of the newer inlines with ADI had sound insulation applied at the factory. It is believed they discontinued that for two reasons:

1) The electrical items for an ADI motor were mounted on the intake side and did not leave enough room to fit it.

2) The ADI motor's electronics benefited from more air cooling, and less insulation helped.

I would not install sound insulation in a newer inline wrap ('79 through '88), unless you can find a really thin aftermarket variety.

The older distro model inlines had more room available, and the electrcal items were mounted on the front cowl support in an area with free air movement. The insulation on the cowl wrap was not a factor.

My 2 cents.

Pay attention of what AMD says, but I have a great shape insulation blanket that fits all inline 6 "Stacks"...the 70's ...I took mine off, and next will be a fabricating friend that will "louver' the cowl like the old XS's...( on a super light Flatbottom...I LIKE that noise!!)
PM me if you can use it...

My tower's blanket was fiberglas insulation in a plastic bag (bag to keep the insulation dry). For me it did little. Reason was that the porosity of the glass, which would have made for the best sound absorption, was blocked by the slick covering which just allowed the sound waves to bounce off and go somewhere else.

Ran mine with and without and could tell little difference.

Hope I didn't step on any toes Scaaty.

Nah, and agree. The sound blanket does little (VERY liittle) in my opinion too. Probably just good for holding heat, and being in a bag, well, still no good.
