Sounds great on muffs but doesn't perform in lake

Why would a motor run fine on muffs but bogs down in the water. Choke it and it runs faster but still only 1/3 of the power if that. New harness, plugs, fuel, rebuilt carb twice, power pack replaced also. It runs for 2-3 seconds sounding great and reves up but bogs down after that. Almost like it stops getting fuel

Check the compression on it.

do a search on bogging, most likely fuel pump if your compression is good

Re: Sounds great on muffs but doesn't perform in lake

Compression was good on both cylinders.
I had a great idea today on how to keep from running to the lake every time to test the boat...then someone said no sh!!??;;:t stupid. .I found out why you use a tank to run the motor in...it's not to save water unlike using the muffs, it's to have a load on it. Duhhh. I had the reasoning on that all backward.
Then I decided to take intake fuel line off tank and run gravity into pump to see if my syphone tube is clogged since its the only thing not redone with the fuel system. Then if that doesn't do it I will bypass fuel pump.
I was so excited with my brain storm that I got set up for in the morning. It got home too late from work and its too dark and cold that I had to stop. I will finish this up in the morning.
I want to say thanks for the tips and for sure on the search on "bogging". Seems to me I need to figure how this site works. Plenty of folks with my same issue and I think I was on right path. I wouldnt have thought of coils because it runs fine on the muffs. The coils will be my next step since it seems to be a common issue with the others. And they are cheap enough and are 30 yrs old
It's almost 1 am and I can't sleep. I want to go outside and check this out. Now maybe my son and I can take it out this weekend for opening duck season. Him and I both have been frustrated and rightfully so. Really nothing can explain the bond between man and motor but it feels good when you feel like you are getting closer. Well, sucks when your not.

Dang, you need to get some sleep.

If you suspect a fuel delivery problem one thing you can try is to keep pumping the primer bulb to see if that'll keep it running.

It could be only running on one cylinder. With it running, pull one plug wire, replace it & pull the other. If it dies when you pull one of them, that is the only one firing.

just pull with some insulated pliers so you can use your trigger finger for duck hunting.

An engine running on half its cylinders may "sound" fine on muffs but run poorly as you found out. Don't start replacing parts hoping you get lucky. Troubleshoot. You can check spark with a cheap spark tester or a timing light. No light -- no spark. If no spark, determine why. If you have spark, mix some fuel & oil in a spray bottle and while on the lake spray into the throat of the carb, one at a time. If the engine picks up you found the issue. Bad carb. Yes -- you rebuilt it -- but did you do it correctly. I too suspect it is a fuel pump issue but having someone squeeze the primer bulb repeatedly while on the water should cause the engine to run better if the fuel pump is bad.

Re: Sounds great on muffs but doesn't perform in lake

My test didn't work...matter of fact I had the flywheel chew down to my knuckle and sprung my ankle. A mechanic called me back and asked what I had done to the motor and he said I forgot to put the nickel sized gasket on top of the tower that rises out of the bowl. That it sucks air rather than gas at wot and load. Sure enough I had asked my buddy about it while we worked on it together the first time and we never remembered seeing it. It either rotted out and disappeared or we just didn't see it fall out. Either way,I'm off to get the kit again.
Thanks for all your guys help. I'll let you know how much

It is a '83 35 hp evinrude....sorry. I got it put back together tonight and ready for the duck season opener sat morning. I hope all is fine and I don't have to worry about getting stranded out on the lake with my 6 yr old.
