Well as it says my starter is starting to squeal when I start up it's a mercruiser 4.3 190 horse. I have recently purchased the boat and te previous owner said he ha to have te solenoid replaced but didn't do the whole starter. My question is can I just go to an auto store and buy a gm 4.3 starter or do I need to specially order it? Also anything tricky or I need to know about replacement that would be different from any other starter replacement? Also if I can just go to an automotive store any special models I need to look for?

You need a marine starter, not automotive. Marine starters are ignition protected, meaning they are spark shielded inside to prevent sparks from causing an explosion should you have a gas leak.

What exactly is the problem, you may not even need a starter. Even if you do, it's usually cheaper to get the starter rebuilt at a Starter/Alternator/Electric Motor repair shop. Usually about half the price of a new aftermarket starter.

It's like squealing on start up wen the starter is cycled. Idk how exactly to describe it it just sounds like what a bad starte would sound like lol. Almost like what a squealing bearing would sound. And being that I generally like using new or remaned parts I'd probably just replace it rather than going the repair route. But I will look in my area to see if there is anyone who does do repairs on them.
