I hope to install a bunch of LEDs in my boat next year. I want two kinds. I want some not-too-bright, wide angle red LEDs that i'd use to gently illuminate my whole floor. I'd hook that up to my 'night light' switch, that also controls the backlights to gauges, etc. Then I also want a bunch of pretty bright white LEDs. These I would hook up to a different switch, and use to light up all around the engine, pee stream, gas tank, battery, bilge area. Plus I'd probably toss one under each side of the dash too.
So I tried switching my old ****ty S-10 pickup to all LED lights, and I had very bad luck with getting ****ty quality LEDs. I'm hoping I can get "the good stuff" for my boat. I'm also going to have to get a bunch and test them out. See if they're not too bright, or not too dim. See how wide the angle is, to see how many I'll need to install and where, and so on. I can think that aside from color, I'm going to need at least three styles of light. A surface mount that is directed in a single direction, a surface mount that lights all around, and an all around that I could attach to a piece of wood underneath fiberglass (rather than drilling a hole and mounting right to the surface of the fiberglass).
Night boating up the Charles river is pretty awesome. It's shore is so well-lit from all the city lights, and there's really no obstructions to speak of. It makes you want to go out there every night.
