I hope to install a bunch of LEDs in my boat next year. I want two kinds. I want some not-too-bright, wide angle red LEDs that i'd use to gently illuminate my whole floor. I'd hook that up to my 'night light' switch, that also controls the backlights to gauges, etc. Then I also want a bunch of pretty bright white LEDs. These I would hook up to a different switch, and use to light up all around the engine, pee stream, gas tank, battery, bilge area. Plus I'd probably toss one under each side of the dash too.

So I tried switching my old ****ty S-10 pickup to all LED lights, and I had very bad luck with getting ****ty quality LEDs. I'm hoping I can get "the good stuff" for my boat. I'm also going to have to get a bunch and test them out. See if they're not too bright, or not too dim. See how wide the angle is, to see how many I'll need to install and where, and so on. I can think that aside from color, I'm going to need at least three styles of light. A surface mount that is directed in a single direction, a surface mount that lights all around, and an all around that I could attach to a piece of wood underneath fiberglass (rather than drilling a hole and mounting right to the surface of the fiberglass).

Night boating up the Charles river is pretty awesome. It's shore is so well-lit from all the city lights, and there's really no obstructions to speak of. It makes you want to go out there every night.

I've used blue water LED's in the past and had excellent luck and excellent customer service with them. There may be cheaper alternatives tho....

Clearly they didn't invest that extra income into their website.

Re: Source for LEDs

Here are the the three sites I have used to install my LED's First is the site I purchased my LED's for under the Gunwhales

http://www.ledunderbody.com/ Main site
http://www.ledunderbody.com/Blue-4pc-Expandable-LEDGlow-LED-Interior-Lights-Lighting-Kit.aspx The actual kits I bought (2)
http://www.ledunderbody.com/2pc15blueexpandabletubes.aspx The extra kits I ordered (2)

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-...ed_prods.htm&gclid=CIuI-b7Iu6UCFSZl7Aodr2P2Yw Replacement LED's for the factory bulbs they have good staff to help you figure out which you need

this winter I will be adding LED's in my engine compartment that will be activated by a mercury switch this allows me to simply open the hatch up and it turns the LED's on automatically, available here lower right part of page http://www.iatft.com/Pages/qp_custom_specialty_switches.htm

Here is my boat so far

Re: Source for LEDs

I've ordered LEDs from about 10 different companies/people. The VERY BEST is v-leds.com

I always get my LEDs from them now. I ve had the same LEDs in my Cadillac for 1 1/2 years now and haven't had trouble with any of them. Even my headlights have 2 192/194 wedge bulbs that are on anytime the car is on and they haven't burned.

If you get some that will be operated for long periods of time then make sure you get some that say they are for constant use. Usually the constant use ones have the little heatsink or whatever it is on the tip where the diode is.

Superbrightleds.com is where I get my LED items for my showtruck, boat, as well as everything else, the reason..........

You can get everything from individual LED's to preassembled units, it really makes customizing alot easier, not to mention the prices are pretty good

Re: Source for LEDs

I just checked it out, they didn't seem to have much at all for preassembled marine units. Looks like it's mostly for retrofitting existing fixtures. I have no fixtures, I'm lighting up from scratch.

Well I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but quite frankly the difference between a Marine fixture and a standard is the price. They have just about any fixture you would find in any application, you just have to look throughout the site, from singles to rope lighting to interior lights.

Heck if you are looking for a certain style etc. let me know and I will find it for ya and give you the part number.

When you go to superbrightleds, clink on the ACCENT LIGHTING tab, that is where you will find the same style you are looking for, some of them are even the exact models you wanted.
