AQ131 motors with SP-A outdrives. Is there a trick to replacing the sealing ring for the eccentric piston on the shift mechanism. The sealing ring is $20 and I attempted to change it but it would not seat right. Do I really need the Volvo special tool, part no. 884793? Also to reinstall the shift mechanism, will I need the Volvo special tool part no. 3856761? What is that tool supposed to be used for? Please let me know any tips or tricks for this seal change. Aloha!

Re: SP-A Shift Mechanism Sealing Ring

Hi there, how did you try and seat the seal ring? Volvo tool 884793 would make things much easier on you to do it right, though I haven't tried as i'm by the book as much as possible, I would imagine you would be able to find something like a socket of the same diameter to fit the seal to help seat the seal. Is the area where the seal rides and lays clean, corrosion free, WELL lubed to help seat the seal?

Is the seals steel edge facing inward?

Tool 3856761 is to help with the shimming process of the center screw. A very important step in making sure this particular job is done correctly.

With Volvo stern drives of this nature, it is very important that any type of rebuilds big or small is done to specifications or it could lead to major failures.

The importance of Volvo shimming is best described by both Don and Muc in the thread below starting with post number 8 if interested.

It appears you are using a Volvo service manual? If not, page 71 should help guide you along.

Hope this helps some, good luck.:)
