I have a 1989 houseboat with 2 AQ131C engines and SP-C outdrives (decals are "SP CD"; verified with boat manufacturer that starboard outdrive serial number is original, port is not). They have hydraulic trim and reverse tilt inhibit. One of the starboard outdrive trim cylinders is broken at the point where the u-bracket is welded to the rod, so I have bought the replacement trim cylinder kit (VP 872612) and plan to pull the drive in the Spring to replace both trim cylinders and rehabilitate the balky reverse tilt inhibit mechanism.
I have downloaded the outdrive service manual and it describes a tool (VP 885146) that is used to support the drive while it is being removed or reattached to the transom shield. I've seen the tool listed online for about $ 600 - seems a little steep. Since the drives are tucked under the boat's rear deck, one cannot use a backhoe, davit, etc to support the drive. I've thought about using a lightweight I-beam, hung from the railing above the deck, with a manual trolley hoist. What have others done is such a situation? Does anyone have the VP tool that they would want to sell or rent (hopefully for less than $ 600)?
