Spar varnish and carpet glue question

Greetings and thank you to everyone on the forum for all that I have learned reading and watching posts this past year! Quick question....I utilized a oil based spar varnish on my marine plywood floor and transom. My plans are to glue carpet on the floor and I picked up some indoor / outdoor carpet glue at HD today because it stated it would work on aluminum. My problem is: the glue also states to "remove" dirt, grime, oil based paints and sealers.

Any one have experience with this? Do I need to: get out the sander and take the finish off.....go ahead as planned it worked for me......find a different glue brand since you have not opened it?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone!

I wouldn't worry about it if it's a latex based adhesive. If it's a solvent based adhesive it may make the varnish lift and wrinkle and will seriously compromise the bond between the deck and adhesive.

Thanks jigandgrub! I'll do a test, and report back if I have trouble. My thinking was the same as it is a latex based adhesive.

Without pictures of what you are working on, all I can say is if I were doing the job, I would certainly remove any and all dried glues from previous things that were on the hull. I always want to start with a clean slate and work from there. Is that going to be easy to do? I can't tell not seeing your project. But there are lots of different type glue removers and I would do whatever it took to remove the old stuff before applying new stuff. Then you know absolutely your new materials will work without failing down the road too... JMHO!
