Hi,

I just bought my first boat and trailer. The trailer came sans spare tire which I have already purchased. As can been seen in the pic below the trailer has a convienent spare tire holder, however there is no securing hardware. What do I need to order to successfully mount my spare tire in this location? I've looked around and can't seem to find what it is I think I need. Help?

You could strap it down, or possibly a long bolt through the support hole and a lug hole.

Just a long piece of allthread with a plate on the top will work. Or if you wan't it to look stock, that trailer looks fairly new, I'd call the manufacturer and ask them if thay have the carrier.

You could also try an auto junk yard. There are a Lot of cars that use that type of hold down for spare tires in the trunk.

You just need a J bolt from the hardware store.

That's an interesting thought. Might have to check that out. I've sent an email to the manufacturer as well, we'll see what they say. I was hoping it would be a pretty standard item, that I could pick up at any store that carries trailer type stuff.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier Question

As stated, a simple galvanized J bolt or even U-bolt would work to secure the tire. There's a hole in the one beam that would work fine- run the bolt through that hole and then through a hole in the rim. Add a nut and VOILA! Spare tire secured.

This isn't on the same track but I bought a spare tire carrier for my trailer a while back and was puzzled. The item bolts on to the tongue to the side and is secured with a plate that secures on the opposite side of the beam. This is a galvanized piece since I hit saltwater occasionally. The carrier itself is completely galvanized as is the sideplate. However, the bolts supplied were not! (???) Who would sell a galvanized carrier and not put galvanized bolts in the kit? Stupid, stupid, stupid. Needless to say I went out and bought galvanized bolts and threw the originals away. Is it really that tough to produce a quality product?

Re: Spare Tire Carrier Question

My trailer is the exact same way I just use a long bolt with a double nut on the bottom and washers on both ends. Mine has two holes and the bolts just go thru the lug holes of the rim. Since it only comes off and on once a year(Itake it off for the winter layup) its just part of the winterization and summerization only takes a few minutes. I have trailered thousands of miles and never a problem. It also makes a decent place to stand when retrieving the boat. I have also been using a bike lock (the rubber coated cable type) to keep it locked up so it doesn't grow legs while I'm out on the lake.

The bolts that came with my galvy spare tire mount were stainless steel, not galvanized. They didn't send just plane ol' steel bolts did they?

Mine's the same, standard zinc 3/8 x 6" bolt and nylock nut/washer. Done. Been that way 10 years now and no probs. Always goes on and off with ease.
