I've got a 1970 6HP seahorse. Tried to check the spark today. Not sure if I did it correctly.

I removed plug (but still in boot), placed it next to engine housing, and pulled the starter cord. I didn't see or hear anything. How visible should the spark be, and would I have heard a popping noise? It was very bright our so I wonder if I missed the spark.

Tried 6-7 times, could not see or hear anything.

The motor started cold after 2 pulls, but once warmed up it has been extremely difficult to start up.

Thanks

Why were you checking for spark? Most of the time the spark is visible but not audible. Check for stuck choke or not opening all the way. How does it run warm after getting it running?

Paul

Re: Spark check - 6HP Seahorse

When motor is cold, it starts after 2-5 pulls. Runs fairly well (was tuned up in Spring - new plugs, condenser, points). Sometimes will sputter - but not often. When I shut motor down, and try to restart - it is very hard to restart. I then decided to do 2 things this morning -check compression and spark.

Compression results (using direct compression gauge - but used the kind you have to hold in place - so you need to be a contortionist to pull starter cord and hold the gauge) - about 65-72 for top cylinder, bottom cylinder about 78-82. I am more confident that I got a better read on the bottom because I was able to hold in in place better, so i suspect that the ACTUAL top cylinder reading is higher.

Any rate, choke appears to work smoothly.

Wanted to check spark - and was not able to see anything. I am going to buy a cheap spark plug tester at pep boys tomorrow, and will try again.
