Re: Spark check?

I enjoy letting my drunk neighbor attempt this on a rainy day, but that's just me.

Actually, there are testers available at auto stores, or you can fab your own. Post the year and model and we can tell you the gap width to set it to. Late model is appx 7/16".... Earlier ignition systems appx 5/16".

Do a search on this site for "spark gap check test" and you'll be flooded with info.

Good luck

You are looking for a bright, white "snap" at a 7/16" gap.
Good luck

Re: Spark check?

I was about to ask a similar question, so I thought I'd tack it onto this thread. I bought one of the little spark testers a few weeks ago. I tried it once when my motor was working, and got a dim spark that was rather hard to see in the sunlight, but it did spark.
However I'm a bit confused about the proper way to use it. In my case, I have 2 spark plugs. I read that you are supposed to ground one lead, while testing spark on the other. Is this necessary? I figured that leaving the other plug wire in place should be OK, since if it's sparking, it would be conducting as good as a ground. Is this wrong?
I also read something suggesting that if you cranked the engine with the plug wire off and not grounded, that damage to the electronics module could result. Why is this, and under what circumstances would it occur? It seems like if this were true, whenever a plug's gap got too big to spark, that you'd damage the module, which doesn't sound logical.
But if you do have to ground plug wires you're not connecting, what is the best way to do this? A screwdriver into the connector or what?
Thanks.

Re: Spark check?

Their is no damage to the electronics if one plug wire is off.

The rectifer can be fried if the battery cable is disconnected. The electricty has got to have some place to go to, On the chargeing circut.

If you have a multi cylinder motor. The best idea is to make up a spark tester so all plug wires are connected at the same time.

If all is working as should be....Itl lite up like uh dang chrismus tree.

Theirs a number of pictures here on the forum as how to build such uh critter.

Real dadburn simple to!...like me...grin!

Good luck!
