Gents,

My engine turns over but will not start.

I have:

Compression is good and it ran a couple of days ago out of the boat
spark it good and bright blue
fuel (got a can running to the fuel pump to ensure it was good fuel.
New battery and fully charged
Carb is squirting fuel when I open the valve

Symptoms
-engine turns over continuously with the plugs out
-engine cranks for 4-5 seconds then the starter disengages the flywheel and continues to turn as if it no longer has enough power to keep the starter engaged.

I started the engine prior to putting it in the boat and it ran fine. starter worked fine as well(I had another starter kicking around so I put that in and the same symptoms were present.
Shift interrupter wires are disconnected to isolate that problem.(is this correct?) For now until I can get an interrupter on order. (wasn't on the motor..Just the two wires it connects to.
-pulled the starter and the bendix moves freely all the way out. teeth are good.

Is it possible I have a bad ground somewhere on the engine? Where to start the trouble shooting?

Any trouble shooting help would be much appreciated as the 58 centimeters of snow we got on the weekend is melting and I'd like to get this project on the water...

Bad grounds, bad cables, loose ends on the cables, loose or dirty connections on either end of the cables.

Check them all.

I have a 86 4cyc. Mercruser that i had running all last year after having new head put on it. 3 weeks ago we started it up and ran for 30 min. Then it just quit. It will turn over i have compression good spark and I'm getting fuel into the Intake. Here's the best part. I'm not getting fuel into the cylinders. I cleaned all the plus and tried to start it with starter fluid and gas then pulled the plugs they are dry as could be. What could it be stopping the fuel from getting into the cylinder?

What are you the forums police. Its the same topic different problem.

No, he isn't, but I am. If you visit our forum rules and the anouncement at the top of this forum, you will discover that you should start a new thread with your question and not hijack someone elses thread with your question. That's just rude.

You know, I've always found it interesting... For each of those types of sayings there is an opposite...

A silent man is a wise one.... A man without words is a man without thoughts.
Actions speak louder than words..... The pen is mightier than the sword.
Beware of Greeks bearing gifts..... Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Clothes make the man...... Don't judge a book by its cover.
Look before you leap.... He who hesitates is lost.
Many hands make light work..... Too many cooks spoil the broth.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained..... Better safe than sorry.
Great minds think alike... Fools seldom differ... :D :D :D

Just kidding JB....

Cheers,

Chris........

Cleaned all connections and pulled the starter and had it bench tested. Starter checks out. New battery cable as well. Would the next step be the ignition?

Could the dissy have moved? I'd be putting a timing light on it and making sure it's firing AT THE RIGHT time....

Or incorrect firing order. Check that too.

Re: spark, compression, fuel but not starting

Found the problem....the coupler was not the correct part and was not holding the flywheel on snug so it would wobble throwing the starter off. Pulled the motor and corrected the problem.

Thanks for all the input..very valuable!
Onto the next issue...
