This was an easy problem I had that was an easy fix for anyone's future reference.
I was pulling a slalom skier out of the water, WOT and RPM's at about 70% when I heard a backfire. I kept going because it only happened once. A couple of pulls later, it happened again and boat power was greatly reduced. There was also some noticeable missing.
I opened the hood and heard unmistakable sound of spark and soon found it jumping from the high tension coil lead to the gray wire post, at a very high rate (probably one spark per fire). I turned the coil lead boot around and the sparking stopped. There must have been a tiny pin hole on the boot which allowed spark through, which is very odd because that wire (along with all the plug wires) is brand new 3 weeks ago.
Engine ran fine afterwards (1990 4.3L thunderbolt IV ignition).
