spark jumping from top of coil wire

what would cause the spark to jump from the top of the coil wire booth to the I assume the small ground wire next to it? (chev. big block)

a sparkplug not firing, a bad sparkplug wire, a crack in the tower

Cracked housing on the coil itself.

Funny, I've read quite a few issues of bad coils on here and I was once told by a member here that coils never fail.

Coils RARELY fail... But for every coil that has failed, about 10,000 get replaced...
