Spark jumping

Hi. I was out on the boat at the weekend. it stopped while I was trawling leaving me with a nice paddle ashore… when I got the engine home I was get no spark. I took the coil off to have a look and I attached the spark plug again. It sparked. I attached it and it started for a bit.
It would not start but I notice a strong spark jumping the positive terminal on the top of the coil across to the black cover. It was going easy way to ground I think.
Can any suggest anything to solve this problem? Please

Gee, it looks like a Mercury coil, likely from a 70's Merc. Some of those had battery powered CDI ignition with a distributor. The triggers can be intermittent.

How are my guesses?

Coil wires and spark plug wires do not last forever. Neither do coils. You can find replacements on the web. Look for "Yellow Tiger Tails".

Spark plug and coil wires unscrew from distributor cap. Rotors are not removeable, fragile and $200+ to buy. They can be tricky to install as you need to disassemble the distributor.
