Re: spark on 57 18hp model fd 11
Hi kenrahe. Be sure to check the points carefully for any corrosion or dirt. When new they should have sort of a flat ray color to them as the ponits are coated with a his layer of tungsten. If the points are corroded you can sand off the crud to create a new fresh surface on the points. However, make sure that they are perfectly clean when done as even the slightest bit of dirt can hamper their performance. I would recommend just getting a new "tune up kit" which includes new points and condensers. They're sold her at iboats for about $25 and all Johnson/Evinrude used the same kit from the mid 50's through the mid 70's. Assuming your coils are good (i.e. not cracked or scorched in any way) you will essentially end up with a new ignition system. A couple new spark plugs wouldn't hurt either. Be sure to get Champion J6C.
Once you've got everything in stalled, be sure to set the points at .020" when they are in the open position. You'll know when they're at their maz when the lever arm on the points is touching the TOP stamped into the top of the crankshaft cam. The spark plugs should be gaped at .030". They usually come out of the box at that gap, but you may want to check them just to be sure.
Here's a pic of what your magneto/ignition should look like when it's all done. Here's a few links that can walk you through the points set up too. Keep us posted.
