Spark plug bushing

I removed a spark plug and could not get the new one to thread properly. Upon inspection of the threads, I saw a small wire-like objects protruding from the spark plug hole. I attempted to remove it with pliers and found it was a bushing for the original plug. Has anyone seen these used before. I'm new to small engine repair. If this is common, will an autoparts store carry a new bushing? If not common, I'd assume removing the head and having another bushing drilled and tapped is the only way to fix this problem?

Re: Spark plug bushing

It a heli-coil. Someone stripped the sparkplug threads out and a Heli-coil is usually a good cheap fix. Any auto parts should carry it. Unless your hole is really messed up your fix could be as easy as screwing a new heli-coil in. Its already been tapped to the right size.

OK. I thought it might be something like that. Thanks for the education ;)

Re: Spark plug bushing

The best fix is a one piece insert pinned in place. Those wire inserts can cause pre-ignition if they protrude into the cylinder.

I had the same surprise as you had on one cylinder, only that my heli-coil was stuck in the spark plug.

I asked the local marine shop, he explained about the heli-coil. I was able to get the old one off of the spark plug and on the new one (used a vice with 2 wood pieces). works fine . A new heli-coil was about 12$, a set to make new threads and a coil was around 80$ here .
