New to the forum...thanks for the help. My head hurts from what I thought would be a simple plug change.

I have a 19' Wellcraft with the original 115 Johnson. I can't figure out which Champion plug to use. The engine plate says 1996. However, the serial number is JX115HLEUA which means it's a 1997 right (E = 9 & U = 7)? I'm assuming it's a 1997 model that was out of the factory in 1996.

Anyway beyond that I don't know if it's a 60 or 90 which would be the difference between a QL78YC and a QL82C (I think).

And then on top of that, the local boat stores carry a Champion L78YC is this the same plug as the QL78YC or do I need to order some QL78YC or the
QL82C in order to get some extra shielding (I don't know just guessing at this point)?

Bottom line, I NEED to go fishing before I go back to work on Monday. Please help.

Tight lines,

Phil

Welcome to iboats.

Use the QL77JC4's gapped to .030

"Q" is an inductive suppressor plug. Not to get into a long discussion of induction, but it does not have DC resistance like an "R" plug would, which is a resistor plug.

Chris,
Thanks for the quick reply. I will get the QL77JC4 plugs tomorrow. If they are not readily available will the QL82C work if I can find them instead? Thanks again.

The QL82C's are fine as well. I have never tried them before personally though. The JC4's are a popular plug, and are usually always in stock.

Chris, Vic.S, and Tashasdaddy,
Thanks for all the input. What a great forum. I'm going to head to NAPA and get decarb materials and the plugs. The more I read on this forum the more I need to do. Better to do the preventitive maintenance ashore than use ash power afloat. Thanks again and happy new year.

Great idea.

Im sure that this is your plan, but just in case, be sure that you Decarb BEFORE you change the plugs. Run her for an hour or so, then change the plugs. That is likely your plan, but just thought that Id mention it in case.

Good luck.

yes do the decarb before new plugs, the decarb is extremely hard on plugs.

Thanks for the reminder. I just put the old plugs back in for the decarb.
