Spark plug manufacturer differences

Can someone please explain the difference between ngk and champion plugs. I know the champions are the oem recomended, but in my particular motor, ive noticed in runs better with the ngk's. Is it the plug design or did i luck out with a more appropriate heat range plug? I have a 1989 johnson 25, on a 14ft aluminum fishing boat. I get 31mph per gps at wot. I use it either wide open or at no wake with nothing in between. 70/30 split on usage. Plugs were champion ql77jc4 and were replaced with ngk br7hs.

I have heard of some engines run better with NGK plugs, I just never had one that would not run properly on champions. If they fit your needs, use them.

Not in the outboard, but I can state that the NGK copper core plugs runs very well in my car that has both aluminum heads and block. I have never been a big fan of Champion ever since I had one break off in the head due to an undercut in the plug material just under the hex for the wrench. I ended up having to pull the head to get the remaining part out. My personal preference would be NGK based on my own experience.

This is one of those questions that really dosen't have an answer. Differant people are going to prefer differant plugs for their own personal reasons. My rule of thumb is unless I'm trying to hot-rod something, I stick with the mfg recomendations. I figure they did allot of testing and RnD and know what works with their stuff.
