spark plug test

i have purchased adjustable spark plug tester and hooked up a switch to turn the engine, i have the switch connected to the solenoid, all plugs disconnected and tester on # 1 and i am getting nothing for spark, should the key be in the on position i am new at this, any help . thanks

The ignition is not active with the key off. Set tester gap at 7/16"
