I have a cracked spark plug wire on the above motor. I discovered it via a nice shock. I have some kits with wire and crimp connectors for a Mercruiser V8 which I can use to make a new lead. The wire is labelled Mercruiser 2208 suppression which indicates some kind of EMI shielding. It is also 7mm. The wires on the motor say "Copper 7mm". My understanding is that wire with shielding has higher resistance per foot (although they are pretty short wires on this motor). Is it likely to cause any problems if I use this wire on these old CDI ignition systems?

Also the connector on one end of the wires on the motor all have this weird non-crimped connector that just pins through the insulation with a bit of exposed core touching up against it. Doesn't look very secure or a reliable connection. Other end is a proper crimped connector. Was this how these wires came from factory?

I'm running Champion QL77JC4 plugs.

emi shielding often done with high resistance carbon fiber wires.... to stop noisy high feq. noise mostly in AM band radios

metallic strand 7mm wire from your local lawnmower or motorbike shop should do

as a test measure a good wire resistance if 0 ohms then it is not carbon fiber so don't use the stuff go metallic stand copper or equivalent
0 ohms is 0 ohms

plug boots with pin pricks are ok if no corrosion present just clean them up cut back 3/8 inches and repin

I just checked the mercruiser suppression cable and it is in indeed a carbon core. It measures about 5000 ohm per foot. Not sure if that is enough to affect performance but will probably just try to buy the copper core if i can find it.

They have used that " weird " connecter for over 50 years.-----Must be very good and reliable I say.

Ha. Just seemed strange to me why it wouldn't be crimped like the other end which seems much more secure.

It has worked well for many years.--------My self I have issues with the thousands of different plastic connecters on modern equipment .----They are expensive / difficult to figure out. / not repairable either.

metallic wire goes about $1-2 /foot ... recently sold for $37/100 feet on Amazon :)

if the engine was issued with carbon core wire ask a dealer if low resitance metallic wires could do any damage...which I doubt but no harm in asking.

in theory (ohms law) 5000 ohms/foot is noting compared to the air gap on plugs ... max voltage drop aka "SPARK" will be at the gap.
