Spark plugs always dripping wet with oil?

I have a 1994 Evinrude 120hp. Spark plugs are always very wet with oil. VRO is disconnected (mix gas 50:1). Does the wet plugs indicate a problem?

Is this after short runs? have you check engine temp while running? Have you serviced the thermostats? Have you adjusted idle mixture?

If all of the above is normal, and the plug aren't fowling......roll on.
If all the above is normal, and the plugs are fouling, try one heat range hotter, but monitor plug and piston tops often...

Re: Spark plugs always dripping wet with oil?

Hey Schematic, it does not mater if it is a short run or long run...plugs always wet with oil at end of the day. I took out thermostats and inspected them and put them back in. They seem to be working fine. I do not know how to check engine temperature (boat does not have temp guage) heads warm up but you can touch them without burning hands. Tell-tale works fine and water pressure is good (5-7 psi at idle, 30 psi at 5800 rpm). Please tell me how to adjust idle mixture and how to tell temperature of heads. I am also interested in how to service the thermostats properly. Sorry about all the questions. I purchased this boat in December and am trying to get everything done before spring gets here. I enjoy working on this motor. It runs strong and does not foul the plugs...just concerned about gunking up the inside of engine.

Several ways of checking temp. electronic thermometer, infrared sensor adapter for digital meter or simply install a temp gauge. As far as idle mixture, get a manual. I don't have one and I'm not sure if your model has adjustments (some don't). You'll need a manual for future reference any way.

Good luck!

Is it all plugs? If not, turn in the mixture about 1/4 turn on that carb (only that carb). Run it and see if they are still wet.
If so, turn it another 1/4turn clockwise.

If all of them are wet, check the recirculation hoses for a blockage.

Re: Spark plugs always dripping wet with oil?

Thank for the help. I think I will purchase a temperature guage and install.

12 Footer....All of the plugs are wet. The recirculation hose...is that the hose that connects to the bottom of the plastic air breather assembly? If so, I disconnected that hose and pluged it. Reason for doing was because breather stays moist with oil and collects dust. It seems like the engine would be pulling in additional dirt through this hose. Do I need to reconnect this hose? Thanks....Doug
