spark plugs for a fat fifty

I have a 1959 evinrude 50 horse and im wondering what plugs im supposed to have in it. the manual calls for J4J plugs and there are J6C plugs in it.... so what ones are supposed to be inthere? also, can i buy them at walmart or do i have to go to my marine dealer?

The Champion J4C (modern replacement for J4J) is the "correct" plug, gapped at .030". It is also the best plug for sustained high speed operation.

Some people run the J6C in JohnnyRudes that call for the J4C because in sustained low speed operation. . .idling, trolling. . . they tend to foul less.

Running the J6C will do no harm, but top end operation will suffer slightly and the engine will be a bit hotter.

The J4Cs are available most anywhere. Try a department store (Wally or K-Mart), and if no go, try any auto parts store. OMC used these plugs on most of their points/ magneto models from the 1950s-70s.

napa carries Champion, call them to see if they are in stock, if not they will get them for you.
