Re: Spark plugs Question
1 1/4 turns out is usually the starting point for setting the carb. It sounds like it is running a little rich. The top cylinder always runs a little leaner in these engines thus the different look to the plugs.
Standard procedure is to close the needle about 1/8 turn at a time with the engine idling in neutral. Allow several seconds in between to allow the engine to stabilize. When the engine goes lean and wants to die, note that point then you reverse the procedure. When the engine stumbles rich, you have the second point. Set the needle to halfway between the two points. Next, take the boat out on the water and give it full throttle. If it dies lean then picks up again, it is too lean. open the needle until the engine accelerates smoothly. If it stumbles then clears itself, it is too rich. Close the needle a bit until smooth acceleration is acheived. In no case go leaner than 3/4 turns open. You will melt the top piston with a lean run and it doesn't take long. Personally, I prefer to go no leaner than 7/8 turn out--even if the idle suffers some
I have just hit the main points of the procedure. Best to buy a manual and study the proper way to set carbs and linkage. Look in iboats and ebay for it or borrow one from your local Library.
