Skeeter,

I usually just replace them when they are worn out. When you look at the firing end of the plug and the centre electrode (the one in the middle sticking out of the ceramic) is looking a bit rounded, instead of square with nice sharp edges, I give 'em a float test. Don't know the float test?

Chris.........
Skeeter,

Float test goes like this.... You throw the spark plug in the water, if it sinks it's no good, if it floats it's ok.

Chris.........
Sounds the same as a swimming test. Throw 'em in the lake and if they sink that means they can't swim

How to know when to change the surface gap type plug ? I just keep cleaning mine and they seem to last forever.
Rod,

Surface gap plugs do wear out. If you take a close look at the centre electrode you may be able to see, where the spark fires across the ceramic to the 'ground', a groove start to appear. When you can catch that groove with your finger nail, time to change 'em.

Chris............
I replace mine every spring after i dewinterize, clean them and spray wd40 on tips.Put them in the boxes the new plugs came in and place them in tool box. This has saved me as well as several boaters i have helped on the water.
DT1
