I was unable to locate OEM Ac Delco spark plugs for my 2002 Volvo Penta 3.0 (GSP-C) engine. I just bought the boat this year so figured while I was doing another maintenance I would just put in some new plugs. I bought some NGK (marine) and they went in quick. My old AC Delcos looked rough and even had some orange paint spray on them (same as my engine block) so I think they may be original! My questions:

1) Gap - I gapped the new ones at .045 per the volvo manual. It seems like the old ones were original and they were gapped at about .055. Should I be concerned? What are the signs of an incorrectly gapped plug?

2) The new plugs were slightly longer, but only longer on the top portion where the spark plug wire attaches. The lower section looked the same length so there shouldn't be any issue

I dabble with repairs/maintenance, but want to make sure my $8.50 maintenance is not going to cause problems! any feedback is appreciated

Re: Spark Plugs

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,....

If Volvo states .045", then maybe the originals are burnt/ worn... .010" ain't bad for 8 year old plugs...

The part of the plug that's Not in the cylinder is pretty much irrevelant...

Re: Spark Plugs

thanks, glad to have found the forum with experts like yourself. Been reading posts on it for a long time and of course had to join this spring when I bought a boat.

That makes sense that the electrode is worn from use and the original plugs were gapped properly. It ran well before the change, but at idle RPM's was a bit rough so hopefully I'll notice a difference.

up next impeller change... more posts to come!

Re: Spark Plugs

Hope you did your cap rotor and wires if they were all 8 years old also.
