johnson (tracker)
40hp,1992, model# TJ40ELENJ.

Just rebuilt the carbs and tried to adjust them as per the book.(wont run with the 2-1/16" space at the spark control rod) Got it to idle some what good and shift into gear without dying with the spark control at 2-5/8".

wanted to re-read the book for it and retry the adjustment but now I cant get any spark at all.
Book tells me I need a special tool pl-88 to test the "power output pack".

Was told to remove the wire to the kill switch and see if I got spark but nothing...

Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help

Re: spark problem

Update...

Did what the book called an total output test and got no spark, then did a charge coil output test with my meter (not the PRV the book called for) Got around 40-50 volts on each terminal A&B Book said it should have been 0 volts. Tried the charge coil resistance test and got a reading of 695 to 700 Book a range of 800 to 1000.

Does this sound right? Am i on the right track?

Thanks....

Re: spark problem

Not sure, but in the Clymer manual for my '89 Evinrude 150, one of the charge coil output tests says you should get zero volts (otherwise the stator or some wires from it are shorted to ground) and the other charge coil output tests says you should get at least 200 volts. That voltage reading is with a peak reading voltmeter, which I don't have but I used a Stevens PVA-1 adapter plugged into a Fluke 87. My manual also states you need a PL-88 load adapter in order to check your power pack output. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm just learning myself! This will at least bump your thread up and hopefully someone else can help you out!
