Hello, I am having a problem with spark, when I go to start the outboard and turn the key I only have spark for a second. As I continue to turn the motor I have no spark, but when I turn the key off I get spark again but just for a second. Could it be that I have a faulty ignition switch? The motor that I am working on is a 1977 Merc 1150 with the distributor.

Any ideas would be appreciated,
Thanks
Brian

Re: Spark Problem

Brian
Well it could be a bad switch but my guess is that it is low voltage. Messure your battery voltage at your motor. With good battery and cables and conections you should see 12.6 volts and not drop below 10 volts while cranking. If battery is discharged or have bad cable connections your voltage may be dropping so low that spark circuits do not work while cranking.

Re: Spark Problem

Brian when you say "spark" do you mean spark jumping at the plugs or are you referring loosely as a term for the starter motor turning over. The way you use the word lends me to believe you mean the latter which is entirely different from the former. Whichisit?

Re: Spark Problem

when i say spark that means I am testing at the end of the spark plug wire with a spark tester.

Brian
