i have a 1990 johnson gt 150. boat has sat for 1 month and went to start it and it wouldn't so i checked for fuel and had it. checked for spark and only had it on 4 cylinders. 3 on the port side and 1 on the starboard. i checked the coils on those cylinders and they are fine any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Intimidator3,You can test the powerpacks using meters or I believe on your motor that the right and left bank powerpacks are identical.Try swapping the one from the bank that is firing all three and see if problem changes to other bank.If so,you'll need a new powerpack.Post back with results.

OB- my engine only has one power pack. also i have heard you can not test with a digital ohm meter that you can only do it with a special needle meter. is this true

Intimidator,Don't know whether it is possible or not to use digital ohm meter verses needle type or not.problem I have had when attempting to perform check is getting manuals and technitians to agree on what a good reading is as no two packs are the same.If you are simply testing for failed spark to two cylinders from a common powerpack I would think you could just swap a known firing powerpack output from another coil with one that isn't firing and see if your no spark location changes.Since you will be performing this check by simply cranking over with starter and all coils are identical this should isolate problem .If firing location changes I would suspect powerpack.
You can checkout this website.Click on enter store at bottom of page. Then click troubleshooting,Then click printout this booklet and scroll down near bottom of page.It gives several test guidelines for specific motors.

Re: spark problems 150 johnson

Intimidator3..... To obtain a true spark reading, the spark plugs must be removed. This is to obtain the highest rpm possible as the engine must turn up at least 300 rpms in order to energize the powerpack properly.

With the s/plugs removed, and at cranking speed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap on that model with a strong blue flame on all cylinders.

You don't say, but if you checked the spark with the s/plugs still installed, that may very well have given you a false reading.

Also (even with the s/plugs removed), if the battery was extremely low, or if the electric started was failing (turning slow), that would of course affect the ignition (spark).
